If you are subject to drug testing at work or in sports, it is smart to ask whether a CBD product could cause a problem. Here is what you need to know.
What drug tests look for
Most workplace drug tests, including the common 5-panel urine test, screen for THC metabolites. They do not test for CBD. CBD itself is not what causes a failed test.
Where the risk comes from
The risk comes from THC that may be present in some CBD products:
- Full spectrum products can legally contain a small amount of THC, which can build up with regular use.
- Mislabeled products may contain more THC than the label says. Studies of products bought online have found labeling problems are common.
- CBD isolate products are made with purified CBD, which lowers the risk, but you should still check the lab report.

How to lower your risk
- Choose products made with CBD isolate.
- Read the batch’s Certificate of Analysis and confirm THC is listed as ND (not detected). See how to read a CBD lab report.
- Buy from a company that publishes a COA for every product.
- If a test matters to your job, ask your employer or testing program about their CBD policy before you use any product.
