If you use CBD, it makes sense to ask whether it is safe to drive afterward. Here is what is known.
What research shows
A 2020 study published in JAMA (Arkell et al.) tested drivers on a closed course after they vaporized cannabis that was CBD-dominant. Their driving was not significantly different from placebo. Cannabis that contained THC did impair driving. Research on CBD and driving is still limited.
Drowsiness is a listed side effect
The FDA lists drowsiness as a possible side effect of CBD. If CBD makes you sleepy, do not drive.
Product quality matters
The research above is about CBD itself. A product that contains THC is a different matter, and driving under the influence of THC is illegal. Choose products made with CBD isolate and check the lab report. See how to read a CBD lab report and Does CBD Show Up on Drug Tests?
Safety tips
- Try a new CBD product at home first, when you do not need to drive.
- Do not combine CBD with alcohol before driving. See CBD and Alcohol.
- Follow the serving size on the label.
- Ask your doctor if you take medication that can cause drowsiness.
