CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the most common compounds found in hemp. Because it comes from the same plant family as marijuana, many first-time buyers ask whether CBD will change how they think or feel. The short answer is that CBD is not intoxicating. Here is what that means and why it matters when you shop.
CBD and THC are different compounds
Hemp and marijuana both contain many cannabinoids. The one responsible for marijuana’s intoxicating effect is THC. CBD has a different chemical structure and does not produce that effect. The World Health Organization’s 2018 review of cannabidiol found no evidence of abuse or dependence potential in people, and no public health problems linked to pure CBD.
Why the type of CBD matters
CBD products are usually made with one of three ingredients:
- Full spectrum extract keeps most of the plant’s compounds, including small amounts of THC.
- Broad spectrum extract has most of the THC removed.
- CBD isolate is purified CBD, usually 99% or more.
If you want a product with only CBD in it, look for one made with CBD isolate and check its lab report. Every Discount Pharms CBD gummy and Airlie CBD product is made with hemp CBD isolate.
How to check what is in a product
A Certificate of Analysis (COA) from a testing lab lists every cannabinoid the lab measured and how much it found. “ND” means not detected. Our guide to reading a CBD lab report walks through each section. You can open the COA for every product we sell on our lab results page.
What people say CBD feels like
Experiences vary from person to person, and research on CBD is still ongoing. CBD does not cause the intoxication associated with marijuana, and it should not affect your ability to think clearly. Start with a small serving, follow the label, and see how your body responds.
Is CBD legal?
Hemp and hemp-derived CBD were removed from the federal Controlled Substances Act by the 2018 Farm Bill. Some states add their own rules, so check your state’s laws before you order. Our shipping page lists the states we cannot ship to.
