Red eyes are often associated with marijuana, so some people wonder whether CBD causes them too. Here is the answer.
Red eyes are linked to THC
The red-eye effect is linked to THC, which can widen the small blood vessels in the eyes. CBD is a different compound, and red eyes are not among the side effects the FDA lists for CBD.
When a CBD product might cause it
- The product contains THC. Full spectrum products can contain small amounts, and mislabeled products may contain more.
- Smoke or vapor. Smoke of any kind can irritate the eyes.
- Other causes. Allergies, dry air, screens and lack of sleep are common causes of red eyes that have nothing to do with CBD.
How to choose
Choose products made with CBD isolate, and check the Certificate of Analysis to confirm THC is ND (not detected). See how to read a CBD lab report.
